Honoring Father Michael Scanlan, TOR

Guest:

STEUBENVILLE, OHIO—An inspiring new video, “A Father to Us All,” pays tribute to the legacy of Father Michael Scanlan, TOR, who as president from 1974-2000, transformed Franciscan University of Steubenville from a struggling regional college into a world-renowned leader in Catholic higher education.

Father Scanlan died January 7, 2017, after an extended illness. The video was released on September 29, the feast of Saints Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel.

“A Father to Us All” features reflections on the life of Father Scanlan and his impact on the Church by Franciscan University President Father Sean O. Sheridan, TOR, Archbishop Charles Chaput, OFM Cap., of Philadelphia; Dr. Scott Hahn, the Father Scanlan Professor of Biblical Theology; Father Scanlan’s nephew Tim Scanlan ’89, and others.

The title, “A Father to Us All,” recalls Father Scanlan’s most cherished role, which he lived out as a “spiritual father,” as he prayed with students, led retreats and pilgrimages, administered the sacraments, provided spiritual direction through his many books and pamphlets, and in many other ways.

On Father Mike’s tribute page, viewers can sign up to receive an email of Father Scanlan’s favorite prayers, including a recorded Rosary led by Father Scanlan himself. Viewers can also advance the mission of Franciscan University by supporting the work closest to Father Scanlan’s heart—the formation of the next generation of academically excellent and passionately Catholic leaders.

The video was produced by 4PM Media and was first shown at commencement and the adult conferences held this past summer at Franciscan University.
