Dr. Brian Scarnecchia: Patenting Life: The Response of Catholicism to Efforts to Patent Human DNA
Guest:
How have both negative and positive eugenics been introduced into our society by Supreme Court decisions? How does the Catholic Church’s teaching on the dignity of the human person stand against this biological reductionist view of the person?
Dr. Brian Scarnecchia, Professor at Ave Maria School of Law, discusses the history of eugenics in Supreme Court cases from Buck v. Bell in 1927 to Association for Molecular Pathology v. Myriad Genetics, Inc in 2013 in his talk entitled “Patenting Life: The Response of Catholic Social Teaching to Efforts to Patent Human DNA and Genetically Modified Organisms Before the World Trade Organization and the U.S. Supreme Court.” Dr. Scarnecchia’s Talk was part of the Catholic Church in World Affairs Conference at Franciscan University of Steubenville.
